There are three theories about the origin of place names in Hong Kong:
Myth 1: Hong Kong gets its name from spices.During the song and yuan dynasties, Hong Kong was administratively affiliated with dongguan, guangdong.From the Ming dynasty, a small port in the south of Hong Kong island was known as "Hong Kong" for the transfer of the spices of southern guangdong and guangdong.It is said that Hong Kong's transport of spices, quality, is called "hainan rare qi", and many local people in Hong Kong are also known as the spice industry, and Hong Kong is famous for its spices.Soon the spice was listed as a tribute to the emperor, and made the incense and fragrance industry at its peak.Later, the planting and transshipment of spices gradually changed, but the name Hong Kong remained.
Idea 2: Hong Kong is a natural harbor, near the river water is sweet and delicious, maritime intercourse sailor, often come here for water to drink, over time, it can stream out of the name, the stream is referred to as "xiangjiang", and the xiangjiang alluvial into small harbour, the sea also began to be known as the "Hong Kong".When a group of britons landed on Hong Kong island, they landed on the island, so they named the whole island of Hong Kong.To this day, xiangjiang remains a nickname for Hong Kong.
Myth 3: because of "xiang gu".It is said that she was the wife of a pirate who took possession of the island after the pirates died.Over time, people named the island as "Hong Kong" under her name.
Some people still call Hong Kong "xiangjiang", "xianghai", "incense island" and "xiangzhou".
English names come and go
The English name of Hong Kong is based on the pronunciation of guangzhou, which was translated as Heung Kong. Many water residents in Hong Kong read "xiang" as "kang", so the English name is also changed to Hong Kong.
