Hong Kong Global Geopark
Hong Kong Global Geopark is a Hong Kong Geopark, located in the eastern and north-eastern area of the New Territories, including the Northeast New Territories Sedimentary and eastern Sai Kung Volcanic two parks were eight major scenic spots. Park covers an area of 49.85 hectares, is the world's smallest Geopark.
Although small park area, but has a world-class acidic volcanic rock columns, also demonstrated during the Paleozoic 500 million to 2,000 million years to 250 million years ago, a period of geological history depositional environment is formed by deposition, very typical and rare sex. Wherein a column containing a high volcanic siliceous acidic rhyolitic volcanic rocks, within a range of 100 square kilometers (sea part), an average diameter of 1.2 m, both in terms of size and rock characteristics are called rare in the world, more particularly the at the same time show the volcanic tuff and lava features, how it is formed, geologists are still mixed views, great scientific value. In addition, the formation of a role in this coastal erosion and deposition of a variety of landforms, where the fossil for understanding ancient Paleozoic environment, geography, climate and biological evolution provides a clue.
September 17, 2011, Hong Kong Geopark won a UNESCO World Geoparks become China's first 26 world-class geological park, is also the world rare geological park located in the cosmopolitan city.
Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region
Features of the Sai Kung Volcanic Rock Region hexagonal rock pillars and coastal erosion features. These hexagonal rock pillars are known in the world at present the largest area and volume, product class tuff, composed of acidic volcanic ash. Thick pillar volume average diameter of 1.2 m. In contrast, Northern Ireland Giant's Causeway World Heritage Site famous hexagonal rock pillars, had a diameter of 0.5 meters of rock. Rock pillars north of High Island Reservoir East Dam, west Ninepin, an area of 150 square kilometers. Most rock pillars located on the seabed, it is estimated that the number of exposed to the coast, about 200 000. Age park rocks 140 million years ago, every evening Cretaceous. Northeast New Territories Sedimentary Rock Region
Geological and geomorphological characteristics of Northeast New Territories Sedimentary park is changing, and the high geological diversity. Age rock the park is 400 to 320 million years ago, Devonian to Paleogene. Bluff Head area has the oldest rocks in Hong Kong. Four scenic parks in the northeast New Territories:
Visitor Center
Geopark Visitor Center is located in Sai Kung Tsui Hang the Lions Nature Education Center, in December 2009 officially opened, the center of an area of about 160 square meters, used to introduce Hong Kong's geological environment, and raise public awareness and to protect the Earth's geological environment interest in science. In addition, within the Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung Sai Kung Country Park Visitor Center also Pavilions geographical features Hiram geological park.
Geological Education Center
Geological education centers run by voluntary groups, local villagers and government to build from the near geological attractions, partially converted from village houses together, providing knowledge and local culture, history, geology and ecology. Has opened education centers are: Tai Po Geological Education Center (Tai Po Sam Mun Tsai New Village), Lai Chi Wo Geological Education Center (Sha Tau Kok Lai Chi Wo Village), Sai Kung, geological and cultural Information Center (Kung Wai Man Road Rest Garden City), Kyrgyzstan Australian geological Education Center (Australia Kat Kat O street).
